Playing The SERP Game

Ok, so what is the key to success to beating Google while still making money? Every internet marketer dreams of being ranked #1 for a competitive search term but few ever attain it. The #1 ranked site for a search term recives about 40% of the search traffic for that term, 6% goes to #2, and then #3-#10 get between 2-0.5% each. I get more traffic to most of my sites for #1 rankings for terms that are searched like 10 times a day then I do for 2nd page rankings on those terms searched 1000’s of times.

So the question becomes how do you get top SERP rankings, effectively “beating” google? Well there are 2 keys: 1) Content and 2) Backlinks. As a tool for building effective sites for this type of project I’m going to outlay a 18 step plan over the next month or so that should help you build a site in around 4 or 5 days if you work at it. This type of site can easily make $1/day, if not $10/day if done right. This might not seem like a ton of cash but they key is to build literally hundreds of these smaller sites. If you have 100 sites each making you $1 a day while doing nothing more that is a nice little chunk of change.

I’m going to encourage people to take up a new project. Build a new site along with this guide and track your results. If you follow this guide along with any other SEO knowledge you have there is no reason why by the end of the project you won’t have a successful site. Give it a shot, work hard and you WILL be successful.

Check back in throughout the week for updates and participate in the discussion. I’m far from being the utmost of authorities on the subject, all I can tell you is what worked for me.

Oh, in case you can’t wait there are defiantly some tips right before your eyes if you just look at and around this blog.

And give me some direction – How much detail do you want? What are you hoping to learn?

#2 flybywire2 on 03.11.08 at 10:18 am

Okay, I’ll give it a go. Waiting for step 1! :) Can I build the site on a free host or does Google punish them?

#3 Clement Nyirenda on 03.12.08 at 6:34 am

Looking forward to the 18 step plan. Wishing you good time as you work on it

Hi,

Very good information it is.

SEO is just all about consistency and doing the correct white hat things. Stay away from the dark side and work hard at your onsite optimization and link building, and you will see success. Of course proper keyword research is essential too.

Just found your blog while searching for KeywordLuv blogs and I’m pretty impressed with it! I mostly read Grizzly and Courtney but have definitely heard of the others as well.

Anyways, great blog and keep up the great work!

I like the general theme of your blog. Google is an enemy of anyone trying to improve their search rankings because we are at the mercy of whatever they decided to do and that can really effect your business.

#9 Rod from British Lions Tour on 04.27.09 at 2:15 pm

I prefer to think of it not so much as “beating” Google, but rather co-operating with the way they and other search engines work, and using that to my own advantage. Like it or not, search engines rule, so you’ll be a lot more successful if you go with the flow. Anyhow, I can tell you already do this just by looking at your site.

Where did you come by those stats, by the way (40% to the #1 spot, etc)?

#10 admin from london escorts on 06.12.09 at 9:12 pm

beating google? well, I know everything is possible but it would take a lot of effort to do this. But we’ll see if your 18 steps plan will work out. Will check on this from time to time.

It’s not too hard to build a site that brings in a $1 a day through adsense but $10 a day can be a lot more work.

#13 Scott from Official Game Guide on 06.30.09 at 11:40 am

Working hard to get the first positions on google is “easy” if you have a plan, let’s say you do all this hard work, finally hits the first place for that term, and then get slapped.. that’s something to bear in mind..

#14 Jean from ZineGuru Website Marketing on 07.21.09 at 7:36 am

Nice post. I believe building links should be an ongoing process as the rewards are for long term and it takes time to get results. The concept of making a few bucks per site and owning several dozens sites is definitely an attractive business model as diversification is important incase some websites don’t prosper.

I drop by on your blog and it gets my attention and can’t stop but reading on it, great post.

I think Google is unstoppable i guess? They have power well who knows one day someone will gonna beat them but its a lot of hard-work for sure.

Have you noticed an increase in the number of comments since installed KeywordLuv? I’ve been considering using it on a blog I own and need some honest feedback.

#18 Mike from Rugby DVD on 08.30.09 at 12:02 am

Hope you don’t mind me going a little off topic, but I was curious as to what extent you have found keywordluv has helped you get more comments…and if they are good comments or just thank you for the post type comments. I found when using this plugin I got a whole heap of “Thanks” type rubbish which didn’t add to my blog at all…it sure did get a lot more people making comments though!

#19 bluetooth freisprech on 08.31.09 at 2:09 am

Well content and backlinks are the two methods for SEO. SEO is just all about consistency and doing the correct white hat things. Backlink method is very famous in SEO internet marketing.

Really very nice post regarding the SERP Game. Every online marketer dream that his site has to rank in first place place but, they can’t because its totally depends up on the keywords.

#22 Jannice from Enterprise 2.0 on 09.25.09 at 1:19 pm

Sounds exciting. However, some of us are still skeptical about spending bucks on a domain/webserver to put the website on. I’m also wondering like what flybywire2 mentioned if free hosting sites like google pages can ruin everything?

#23 Natalie from Top Exercise Videos on 09.25.09 at 9:34 pm

It’s definitely better to rank #1 for a term than #10 for something with more traffic.

#24 Jewellery on 10.06.09 at 10:00 pm

This is a good news SERP game is very interesting. this game is to play on internet, so thanks for this title.

You see I really do look at it as a constant battle with google. I struggle to ‘get along’ when the decisions it makes seems random.

#26 Tess from ghostwriting services on 11.03.09 at 6:43 pm

I agree – great content (that is optimized well for keywords) and good backlinks are the crucial points in gaining traffic and search engine rankings. Of course, article marketing, social media and other things don’t hurt either :)

#27 Leonard from Iomega External Hard Drive on 11.13.09 at 7:59 pm

” Google is an enemy of anyone trying to improve their search rankings…” Sad but true…Google often being unfair to us because they have the authority on our rank.

#32 john from hp 56 ink on 12.04.09 at 11:28 am

This post is sort of old, but I hope that I will learn something from your steps. It makes sense if you can rank #1 for google, its almost like jackpot.

#33 Samuel Sawyer from cure social anxiety on 12.08.09 at 8:26 am

This looks very good on paper but I don’t think it works very well in the real world.
From my perspective, I think it is easier to build 3 to 5 strong sites rather than 100 sites.
It takes just too much time to manage them.

#34 Jonny from farmville cheats on 12.12.09 at 4:48 am

I will check your 8 steps project here, to me content is the most difficult part.

Hundred dollars a day from a hundred sites. Seems like a lot of work. Are you sure there isn’t an easier way to make money? I might start selling drugs.

#36 Victoria from SMEketing: Marketing Company Hampshire on 12.22.09 at 9:58 am

I don’t know if I agree when you say you can ‘beat Google’. I think SEO is about working with Google and the other search engines. At the end of the day they want to present their customers (the searchers) with the best results possible.

The best results are sites with lots of fresh, unique content. People love up to date content, which is why Google loves it too. You need to work with what Google want from a site – sure tweak it so that they know exactly what kind of search query your site is relevant for. But at the end of the day SEO is about creating a user friend/search engine friendly site. Not about screwing over Google!

#37 Jacob from Best Gaming Keyboard on 12.26.09 at 10:27 pm

I really like the idea of owning 100 sites that all make $1 dollar a day. It makes things seem so much more achievable that way. This is my mentality and business model and I’m going to follow it to success.

#38 Raygen from Raygen's Basement on 12.31.09 at 12:22 pm

intresting, I have never heard of the premise “beating google”. However, I like the idealogy behind it. It seems that Google can be very picky at times, and it seems there is no real logic as to what ranks and what doesn’t.

i have seen sites with a small amount of backlinks rank high then sites with hundreds of relevent ones. Google seems to become more and more of a mystery everytime they update it.

It is still better than Bing which is just garbage.

i am going to look at steps to follow and give them a try. Thanks for the info.

Any thoughts on how google caffeine might affect SERPs?

#41 Abdul from How to make money on 01.15.10 at 11:49 pm

The truth is, moving from position number 3 to position number 1 brings a BIG change to the traffic you get. I’m telling this from personal experience.

#42 J from Learn WordPress on 01.20.10 at 8:00 pm

I’ve been working on a similiar project, which included building a bunch of smaller sites that rank for certain keywords. It does seem to be the best way, since it does require less work on each site since you don’t have to rank for super competitive keywords.
